Asphalt Tons to Square Feet Converter

You have a tonnage — a delivery ticket, a supplier quote, or leftover from another job — and need to know what it paves. Enter tons and compacted thickness to get the covered area in square feet and yards, plus a thickness ladder so you can trade thickness against coverage instantly.

The Formula

Sq ft = (Tons × 2,000 ÷ Density lb/ft³) ÷ (Thickness in ÷ 12)

How the Calculation Runs

  1. Convert tons to pounds (× 2,000).
  2. Divide by density to get compacted volume in cubic feet.
  3. Convert thickness to feet (÷ 12).
  4. Divide volume by thickness to get covered area in square feet.
  5. The thickness ladder repeats step 4 at common lift thicknesses.

What Each Variable Means

SymbolVariableUnitNotes
WAsphalt weightUS tonsNet delivered weight. If your ticket includes an allowance, that is fine — the area answer reflects it.
TCompacted thicknessinFinished thickness after rolling.
DDensitylb/ft³Compacted mix density; planning default 145.
ACovered areasq ftVolume ÷ thickness.

Entering Your Numbers

  • Asphalt (US tons)
  • Compacted thickness (in)
  • Density (lb/ft³) — Typical hot mix runs 142–148 lb/ft³. Use your supplier’s mix-design value when you have it.

Known Limitations

  • Assumes the tonnage is compacted weight at the density entered. Recycled or porous mixes shift density — get the mix-design value from the plant.
  • Coverage is net. Real-world yield drops slightly on ragged edges, trenches, and handwork; when ordering (not back-calculating), add an allowance with the square-feet-to-tons tool.
  • Thin lifts under 1 in are rarely practical for asphalt paving; the ladder stops at values crews actually place.

Worked Examples

Every number below is produced by the same engine at build time — not typed by hand.

One tandem truckload — 20 tons at 3 in

Area covered (compacted): 1,103.45 sq ft

  1. Weight: 20 tons × 2,000 = 40,000 lb
  2. Volume: 40,000 lb ÷ 145 lb/ft³ = 275.86 ft³
  3. Thickness: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
  4. Area: 275.86 ft³ ÷ 0.25 ft = 1,103.45 sq ft

Leftover overlay material — 7.5 tons at 2 in

Area covered (compacted): 620.69 sq ft

  1. Weight: 7.5 tons × 2,000 = 15,000 lb
  2. Volume: 15,000 lb ÷ 145 lb/ft³ = 103.45 ft³
  3. Thickness: 2 in ÷ 12 = 0.1667 ft
  4. Area: 103.45 ft³ ÷ 0.1667 ft = 620.69 sq ft

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet does 1 ton of asphalt cover?

At 145 lb/ft³: about 55 sq ft at 3 in compacted, about 83 sq ft at 2 in, about 110 sq ft at 1.5 in, and about 41 sq ft at 4 in. Thicker pavement covers less area per ton.

How many square feet will 20 tons of asphalt cover?

At 3 in compacted and 145 lb/ft³, 20 tons covers roughly 1,103 sq ft — about a 20 × 55 ft driveway. Use the ladder above to see thinner and thicker options.

Is this the same as converting tons to cubic yards?

Related but different. Tons to cubic yards ignores thickness — 1 ton at 145 lb/ft³ is about 0.51 yd³. This tool goes one step further and turns that volume into paved area at your thickness.

Should I add waste allowance to the area result?

No — not in this direction. If you already hold the tonnage, the area shown is what it paves. Allowance matters when you are deciding how much to order; use the square-feet-to-tons converter for that.
